I must say that this book was quiet a surprise to me. I picked it up on whim. I had read one of Anne Mallory's books and liked it very much.
This story is about childhood friends who were torn apart by a secret and misunderstandings. As adults, these characters, they treated each other with disdain publically, while privately, they longed for each other.
Through an attack on Valerian, they are able to work together to find out who attacked him and their friendship is rekindled.
Abigail is a strong character who has gone through a lot and has remained grounded. she could have easily been cynical and jaded. I didn't like Valerian at first, but as the book went on, he redeemed himself.
This book showed insight on how people who were different from the norm were treated and how doctors took advantage of patients all in the name of science.
Although the description on the back is very vague, i took a chance. I was confused for the fiirst few chapters, but i must say, i was glad that i persevered and read on. this story turned out to be great. I won't spoil the book and reveal the reason behind the confusion.
