This was a great read! It's about George Rogers Clark (the older brother of the Clark from Lewis & Clark). Set at the time of the revolutionary war, Clark sets out to take back much of our country in the Illinois and Kentucky territories, in the hands of the British, who were hiring the local Indians to kill the white settlers and bring back their scalps. George's band of men was small but excellent marksmen, woodsmen, and several roughians.
While the British bought the Indians with wampum beads and liquor and other wampum, George won them over with honesty. With stealth and surprise George's roughshod band overtook a much larger force and made friends and allies with the French, Spanish, and the Indians in their territory. All done with no remuneration from the almost insolvent state of Virginia. Great, exciting adventure, romance, and lots of historical information. Very engrossing!
