What an amazing series. I never get board reading Christine Feehan's books. In this book we are introduced to several new characters. Destiny, a young woman now, was introduced to the Vampires life as a child. Taken by a Vampire after her family was slaughtered in front of her, she reached out the only way she knew how, telepathically and was answered by her life-mate Nicolae. Unbeknownst to Nicolae his life-mate has sent out a call in terror. She was being abused in the most horrific way. She was being raped, beaten, shown how to feed while murdering and much more. She was slowly loosing her sanity and her only anchor through this was her life-mate, Nicolae. For years he tried to find her. Unable to find her he did what any male Carpathian would do, he showed her through memory how to become strong enough to kill her captor. Eventually years later she kills the Vampire who took her and has now become the first female hunter known to their kind.

Unbelievably strong of mind and spirit she lives her life daily with pain and anguish because of the tainted blood that runs through her. She knows nothing of the Carpathians and believes they are all Vampires. Her only goal in life is to hunt and kill all Vampires to keep what happened to her from happening to another.

Upon meeting Nicolae her foundation is shaken. She sees the darkness in him yet he doesn't smell like a vampire. She cannot find a trace of the taint of evil. She is drawn to him and fears the attraction. She wants to be close to him and yet her mind rebels from the trauma she's sustained. Nicolae has lived for centuries and if he has to find the patience that she requires then that is what he'll give her. He can do no other than give her what she needs to make her happy. He only wants her to see how he sees her and feels about her. He wants her to know that love is not painful but beautiful. He'll do whatever it takes to show her in every conceivable way. Good thing he's up for the task.

This story also introduces Nicolae's brother Vikirnoff. Already close to turning his last assignment is to find a woman that is being hunted by the fanatics. He feels a connection to her and has taken it upon himself to find her to take her into the protection of their price.

Father Mulligan is a holly man who seems to know things about the Carpathians that no other was allowed to have knowledge since the Princes priest who died many years ago.

Velda a psychic with the ability to see an aura and has discovered that her life-mate, Pater, has turned Vampire because he could not find her.

Merry Ann a psychic with an ability to connect with others. She will be taken to the Carpathian mountain to meet the prince in order to find a mate.
