What a lovely story....that's because the two main characters, Donal Fleming and Cordelia Hardcastle are two loveable characters. Donal, the main character, has inherited enchanted blood from his otherworldly father. Donal is a veterinarian who has the special gift of talking back and forth to any species of animal. Since I'm an animal lover, I was very pleased with this story. But, with humans, Donal is quite wary.
He meets another animal lover, the very human Cordelia Harcastle, while trying to stop an escaped, rampaging animal. Cordelia bravely, but foolishly tries to stop the elephant by standing right in its path. Donal comes along before the elephant can run over her, runs along with the elephant and is able to stop it.
Donal is attracted to Cordelia but if he marries her he'll lose his gift with the animals, something he's not willing to do. He gets invited by Cordelia to her estate to inspect her menagerie of exotic animals to find out what is making them so listless. He starts feeling closer to her but gets more and more conflicted as time goes on. There are also 2 other characters creating mischief in both Donal's and Cordelia's lives; enough so that Donal feels he has to leave the estate.
But it ends happily for all concerned despite misunderstandings and devious plans from others. I love British characters in books; they're so unique. These two are not only unique but despite their individual faults and shortsightedness, they're loveable. A very sweet book overall and I definitely recommend it.
