Historical fiction. We've all heard about Harriet Tubman's work on the Underground Railroad. This book focuses on one specific event in her work. Working in the islands off South Carolina, she and several other scouts worked their way up the Combahee River looking for torpedo locations the Rebels had staked out. Finally convincing the Union soldiers to carry through with the raid, Harriet, her scouts, 300 black Union soldiers and Union leaders navigated the river on a daring raid to free hundreds of slaves from several prominent plantations and lay the plantations to waste. Heartbreaking, interesting look at the life of Harriet and her sacrifices and losses in her own life.
