This book was previously in a junior/senior high school and the story is at that age level. Having said that, I did enjoy both the story and the author's note at the end relating the fact that some women did join the army during the civil war disguised as boys. There weren't mandatory physicals so it was fairly easy to pull this off. The descriptions of the battle Sarah, the main character, took part in would have been psychologically damaging to any young person, male or female. Also reading about the beginning of the Pinkerton spy system was very interesting. No matter what age, if you like historical fiction you'll enjoy this book. I just feel there must be a sequel because I was left wanting the ends of the story tied together.
