This is the true story of a young girl that survived the Rwandan genocide of 1994. The girl, Jeanne, was later adopted by a German family, and Jeanne's story is interspersed with comments from her adoptive mother. It is helpful to understanding the story if you first do a little research about what happened in Rwanda - otherwise you will spend a lot of time trying to mentally form a context for this story. The girl, Jeanne, is not portrayed as heroic or idealistically, but she is a courageous survivor with a tenacious will. For those who thought the Holocaust taught the world a lesson, please read this book. We didn't learn enough. . .
