This is both a gritty book and a very funny one. Bouton exposes the underbelly of baseball back in the '70s, and his words have an ironic ring when it comes to the state of baseball today.
When I read this 20 years ago, I remember being shocked -- this isn't what REALLY happened in the dugout, is it? These are my heroes and they are doing WHAT? I also remember laughing out loud a lot. And, surprisingly to me, Bouton is a damn good writer for a lousy pitcher.
