This is a book from the "Conard County" series with other characters from other books woven into it. This story centers around an older couple (Nate & Marge Tate) who have been married more than 25 years with six daughters. Before they were married and Nate was in Viet Nam, Marge had gotten pregnant with his son. Marge's father intercepted their letters to each other and for a time it was thought Nate had died in the war. Marge had the baby and her parents coerced her into giving it up before everyone knew Nate was alive. After his return, they were married, had the girls and had a happy marriage. Until Seth showed up wanting to know his roots. His adoptive parents had died and the adoption records were no longer sealed. Marge kept the secret all these years to protect Nate from being hurt and in fear of losing him. Nate knew something was wrong in these last few months because Marge was so jumpy and nervous and losing weight. He thought she was leaving him or sick. Seth showed up on Christmas Eve to tell everyone he was leaving town and Nate went berserk. He kept saying he didn't know Marge anymore, that if she lied about this, then what else had she lied about. He leaves the home they've known and gets a room above the town tavern. The whole town butts into their business and tries to get them to get back together. Both want to but Nate is so stubborn about "the lie" that he can't get past it. Instead of being glad he has a chance to get to know his son, he obsesses about never being told. The "lie" was just drawn out too long for no reason in my opinion. This wasn't one of the better stories of the series.
