At first I had trouble getting into this book... it may have been partly because I was reading it while battling sinuses and allergies (Sinus headaches SUCK haha, I get congestion real bad too when its both) too though. I wasn't fully invested in it for awhile, but I was intrigued enough to continue and see where the author was taking Ellis, Annie, and Michael on their journey.
I'm an easy crier for movies, but not so much for books... not sure why, but it takes a good suckerpunch so to speak for me the tears to start rolling (Lily and the Octopus is one example ). There were a few moments that hit me in the chest when I saw how everything fit together, and all I wanted to do was give everyone involved a huge hug.
Looking back after finishing the novel and reading the author Q&A... the way the book was written earlier fits perfectly where Ellis was at in his life and what he was going through. And it was done well.
It was an a beautiful friendship those three had and it made me smile to see them together.
The whole story had a bittersweet quality to it, a beautiful sadness at times that underlined the people's lives.. like a black clouds in the sky.
I did enjoy the book but I also felt distant at the same time from everything happening. Perhaps it was meant that way though.
A short little read, but a powerful one.
3.5 to 3.75 stars
