Although I find most Christian-flavored books to be charming, this book was predictable and dull. I've just found out that this is the 8th in a series; perhaps that is the problem.
Our hero is a lawyer of some repute in Denver, who doesn't realize he needs a wife until his most important client, Mrs. Singletary (a widow), points out the fact to Reese Bennett, Jr.
She tells Reese to make up a list of requirements for a bride and she will help him find one. Mrs. Singletary has just employed a new companion, a Miss Callie Mitchell, one of two daughters of a well-respected and prosperous family in the area.
Reese and Fanny (Callie's more vivacious sister) have recently decided not to marry and Fanny has taken a job in Chicago. Callie is frantic that Reese will find a new bride before Fanny comes to her senses and returns to marry Reese. It doesn't seem to make sense that Callie does not listen to Reese when he tells her repeatedly that he would not marry Fanny even if she reappeared.
The couple is very clumsy around each other for most of the book. This doesn't make sense because Reese has been married before and is a mature, seasoned attorney.
Mrs. Singletary takes Callie in hand because she dresses in a dowdy way; she has new clothes made for Callie and has a maid rearrange her hair. The dreary Cinderella emerges a vibrant, beautiful woman. Eventually, we find out why Callie has been a wallflower since her return from school in Boston. Her shame seems rather overblown. Yes, lapses of a moral nature were serious issues in that day and time; however Callie doesn't let it rest. It is mentioned every few pages.
Each adult individual around the couple snickers and smiles because they 'know' that the couple will get together. I think this book hardly rates a 3.
