Overall, this one was a mixed bag.

Phineas, Dr. Phang, has been the shallow one line sex machine since he entered the scene. We find that the act is getting old and Phineas is not as shallow as he appears. He's looking to shed that image but not sure how. Following this aspect of the story was enjoyable. I always felt there had to be more to him. He's stuck between his attraction to the human woman who can't stand him and his attraction to the shifter who can't stand him. You can't help but feel for him.

Bryn, the shifter, was so fun in previous books. She had grit and attitude. She is completely gutted here. No strength, no grit, nothing. Part of it is understandable as she is going back to where she grew up that has many bad memories for her, but the fearfully dull Bryn is a pain to read about.

The attraction sparks far too quickly and feels shallow.

Phineas introduces us to his brother, which starts out fun but turns cliche and painful as it progresses.

Finally, just as I was onboard with the ending and my thoughts that her father would finally get what he deserves, psycho dad is forgiven and something happens to Phineas that changes him in a ridiculous way that makes you wonder if it was that easy why don't all the vamps do it.

So while I'm not giving up on the series, I'm hoping for more out the next one.
