This is one of the best books I have read in recent years. I have recommended it to many friends and to my book club.
The author caught the magic realism style of South American writers even though she is from North America.
The ending is a change from the pace of the book, but I think the author intended us to realize that the magic of the situation was over and that real life had returned.
I encourage you to read it.
