This book was not accurately named, as it does not provide much understanding of the people who join cults. It does however provide some understanding of the people who lead them.
Each chapter focuses on a specific cult. The well known cults (Manson Family, Branch Davidians, etc.) are covered, as well as some cults I had never heard of (the Ant Hill Cult is particularly brutal!) There is a biographical sketch of each cult leader (including what childhood trauma, abuse and/or neglect they endured which likely contributed to their career choices), followed by a summary of their beliefs and practices and recruitment tactics. Each chapter ends with its subject dead or in prison, with one exception.
Some of the cults discussed have been the subjects of books and Netflix or HBO documentaries, so there isn't new information about them in this book. It was fascinating to read about the lesser known cults, and the author has a dark and very dry sense of humor.
