Legacies, by Janet Dailey, is set in 1860 and revolves around events created by the Civil War. Handome, part-Cherokee, Harvard educated, Lije Stuart & debutante Diane Parmalee have a tragic legacy. The wealthy Stuart family burned with the memory of the government's forced march of the Cherokee on the Trail of Tears.
