Book Review of A Confederate Girl: The Diary of Carrie Berry, 1864 (Diaries, Letters, and Memoirs)

This is a nice example of a diary for children. It even includes illustrated instructions on how to make a sock doll, as the girls did in the 1860s.

However, the editor, Kay Olsen, did make two interesting mistakes.

First, she has young Carrie starting her diary in 1854. This was ten years before the Battle of Atlanta, which Carrie describes in the diary, and Carrie would be less than one year old.

Second, she has Sherman dividing his armies into two groups, with one taking Savannah, GA, in December, 1864, and another taking Columbia, SC, in February, 1865. Actually, this was the same army which captured Savannah first, then went on to take Columbia.
