Mark Childress' book is about race, religion, family, and love. This coming of age story takes place in Minor, Mississippi in 1963. Daniel Musgrove's father is a traveling salesman and he moves the family from one state to another every year. When they wind up in Minor, Mississippi, Daniel makes friends with another social misfit, with disastrous results.
At turns laugh out loud funny, heart wrenching and horrific, One Mississippi is a filled with interesting characters and nostalgic references to pop culture. Enjoyable ... but disturbing. I will definitely seek out his other books to read.
