This is a book about an interracial romance in the 1970's and is based upon a true story. The 1970's was a time of social and political change such as protest against the Vietnam War, the civil rights, women's rights, and labor movements. Diane Jones is an African-American honor roll student who participates in these movements, but her father is old school and has plans to marry his daughter off.
Diane doesn't like the domestic violence her mother goes threw and rebels against her father. She instead makes plans to support herself and to never get married. She starts working at 13 years old taking working various labor jobs with the help of her mother. Finally she starts babysitting for a wealthy white family when she runs into David the son of her employer and the love of her life. But there's a big problem she has to overcome in their relationship, he's white and love between whites and blacks are still taboo.
David however wants to be with Diane regardless of her color and purses her. They start a secret relationship that she can no longer keep in the dark. I don't want to tell you the ending so please give the book a read. You'll like it.
