Anxiously, I awaited this book, as I am a child abuse survivor and I am at times still struggling with certain things about the abuse. The first step in healing is being able to talk about the abuse and share it. I read this book in less than a day, leaving all my housework undone until I finished it. I would highly recommend this story of faith in God and surviving abuse to any one else who has survived abuse or to family members of abuse survivors as a door to understanding some of the mental and physical effects that are the aftermath of such abuse. Abuse survivors long carry the scars mentally and physically, though the mental scars are the one's that last forever.
"Cruel Harvest" is a powerful and yet horrifying story of Fran Grubb and her family's surviving and dealing with the abuse they suffered by the hands of their sociopath father Broadus. Broadus is a very mean, cold, mentally unstable alcoholic who abuses his whole family unmercifully. He has a Jekyll and Hyde personality, who can con most anyone. Fran's mother is a kind-hearted, yet timid, woman who has been tore down mentally and physically by Broadus until she has lost nearly all hope. Broadus also abuses Fran and her brother and sisters, even to the point of murdering Fran's baby sister Katherine. Every time the family starts to get a little bit of stability or real love in their lives their evil father takes that away from them again.
This story is well told, with such emotion and rawness that you can see every horrid detail as it plays out. I couldn't stop reading it. It's a story of faith in Jesus, strength of character, forgiveness, and horror which will touch your heart.
In the end, there's an "Author's Note" mentioning that Mary Ann and Millie couldn't be found, but there was no mention of Fran's infant brother Broadus Jr. I am still praying that Mary Ann especially got out okay and that Broadus Jr lived through it.
I'd highly recommend this true memoir to anyone who likes all too real stories. If you enjoyed this book and or are an abuse survivor, might I also suggest My Light at the End of the Tunnel which also is a true story about surviving abandonment and abuse.
