I have been resisting this author, fully expecting her books to be of the smutty jump-on-the-paranormal-bandwagon type. I was quite surprised to enjoy the story, and although it won't be on my keeper shelf, I will be looking to read the rest of the series. Riley Jenson and her twin brother Rhoan are a rare and unknown half-vampire, half-werewolf hybrid. They both work for the Melbourne's Directorate of Other Races, which polices the activities of supernaturals. When Rhoan disappears while on a case, Riley, who is only an office worker but whose boss has been trying to get her to join her brother as a guardian, is pressed into investigating. But it's not easy as she is in her moon-heat, which is terribly distracting and makes it difficult to resist the attractive vampire who shows up on her doorstep looking for her brother too. Reluctantly joining forces with him, they uncover a plot of genetic manipulation which could unleash a force of monsters on the city. Though Riley exasperatingly can't seem to see the betrayal that's right in front of her face, and the vampire Quinn is eye-rollingly stubborn in fighting the deep connection he has with her because a werewolf broke his heart once, the characters on the whole are easy to sympathize with, the sex has its place in the story and is unapologetically entertaining without being overbearing, the mystery intriguing, and the story sprinkled with enough action to excite. All in all pretty enjoyable.
