First of all, Matthew Bartholemew is not Brother Cadfael. While Ellis Peters' medieval mysteries made sense and were not drawn out, the author of this book loses track of where she is going.
The book has so many circuitous plots and character introspections that after awhile you start scanning and then skipping entire paragraphs. I finally got to the point where I wanted everyone mentioned in the book to die from the Black Plague so the book would end.
For whatever reason, my book's cover lists this as "The Third Chronicle of Matthew Bartholomew," while Fantastic Fiction lists it as the first in the series.
