This was a fascinating collection of data, journal entries and anecdotes from the first pioneers to take wagons, oxen and mules from Kansas to California. The Donner party is mentioned, along with other famous western travelers, from 1941-59, including the 49ers of the gold rush. Also of note are the stories of how many common places we know in the west got their names during these trail epics -- Truckee, CA; Steamboat Springs, etc. I'm not a huge fan of history, but this was fascinating reading. Highly recommended.
