Sixth in the series, but I expect a new reader could start with this anyway. I didn't remember much about Mattie's personal life - it's been a few years since I read the last one - but there's plenty of explanation. I did remember that I always like the setting in this series, Mizushima describes the mountains and the area very well, and the details about working with horses and dogs are also very good. There's a few different suspects to start with, but the major villain seemed pretty obvious to me right away. No plot twists here, it all unfolded about like I expected Minor quibble...the xylazine was a major clue but I didn't see why the villains used it more than once, given the murder methods, it didn't seem necessary. The subplot of Mattie meeting the remainder of her long-lost family was nice, although I thought that maybe they established love and trust awfully quickly after so many years apart. I'm thinking we might see more about that in the next books. I have the next one on my list.
