Most teens have a unique relationship with their parents. It's as though they don't realize that their parents used to be teenagers, too! (On the other side of the coin, most parents seem to forget that, too â or at least what it was LIKE to be one.) I mean, think back â some of you recently, some of you quite awhile back ⦠remember when you found out that your parents were actually super-villians and had control over the crime in your city?
Wait â that's not typical ⦠but it IS the basis for Marvel Comics' âRunawaysâ series. How much loyalty to do you show your parents when you discover that they've hidden away the fact that they have super powers, or are actually from another time / galaxy / dimension? AND ⦠how do you strike a balance between watching out for your kids and stopping them from potentially revealing secrets that you've spent a lifetime building up and protecting?
I wanted to enjoy this first collection of stories more than I ended up doing. With so many characters to introduce â on both sides of the legal fence â the introductions and reveals took a lot longer than they typically do in a comics series. I struggled to maintain my interest while reading this collection, but I didn't feel I could give up since I'd also invested in Volume 2 at the same time and didn't want both purchases to go to waste (VERY MINOR SPOILER FOR BOOK 2's REVIEW: I'm sure glad I DID tough it out though!)
RATING: 2 1/2 stars, rounded up to 3 stars where 1/2 stars are not permitted.
