For months, Ive waited in eager anticipation for this book. Would Ronnie and Marty find each other? Was Marty getting better? When I found Ronnie and Martys story as the secondary romance in this book, I was elated. My patience had paid off.
I simply could not stop reading until the last page; I cannot remember being taken on such an emotional roller-coaster ride in the pages of a book. Im not a weepy reader; however, I spontaneously burst into to tears at a dramatic point in the story.
All the usual suspects are there: Martha Q, the innkeeper; the Biggs brothers, Beau Yates and undertaker Tyler Wright. They are the citizenry of Harmony upon which winds of change and trouble blow.
There are 2 new characters: Cord McDowell and Nevada Britain. Cord has returned from a 6 year stint in the Huntsville prison for a crime he didnt commit. He works a full time job as a mechanic and uses his off hours to tend his farm. If he cannot keep up with the mortgage payments to the bank, he is in danger of losing his family farm.
Nevada Britain is the poor little rich girl who is about to lose her ranch because of poor management. Her areas of focus are the family oil fields and her stable of wonderful horses. She needs someone to stop the downward slide of the Boxed B Ranch.
Nevada makes a wild offer to Cord; a sane man would pass it by. He accepts the challenge knowing he has 8 months to turn things around. This is simply a business deal; it doesnt take long to see that Nevada and Cord are involved in far more. Escalating crimes keep the Boxed B on edge.
Martha Q and the Granny Detectives add humor to this sad book. It was uplifting to see 2 of the towns rejects (Cord and Nevada) become accepted members of the community. Nevada has a particularly awful reputation to overcome.
Some stories that I read are forgotten as soon as I close the book; this isnt one of those books. Id been waiting to read more of Ronnie and Martys story because their (previous) story made such a lasting impression. This is a wonderful series; however, this tome is gut-wrenching. 5 stars
