Book Review of Midnight: A Gangster Love Story

Midnight: A Gangster Love Story

Some people have been in anticipation for the second coming of Coldest Winter Ever for so long that they will have a hard time appreciating this book on its own merits. Get Coldest Winter Ever completely out of your mind. This isn't it and it will never refer to that story. In fact it's a prequel to TCWE so you won't see the Santiago family at all. It is however, a very well written and fascinating story of a young man attempting to stay true to himself, his culture, his family, and his religion even in the face of consistent temptations and much responsibility.

Midnight is a very strong young man (14 years old) who knows what he wants and works hard to provide for himself and his family. The cultural aspects that are discussed in this book are both eye opening and educational and at the same time interesting. They help to shape the course of the book and to help to explain Midnight's thought processes and his relationships with others.

I am hoping beyond hope that this is not the end of Midnight's story and that we will get to see how he goes from the young man in this book to the life he leads in Coldest Winter Ever. Something tells me we've only heard the half of it and there is much more to come.
