Divorced and unemployed, even abandoned by her dog, Phoebe Turlow hopes that a weekend on Paradise Island will help her forget her problems. But when she arrives at the historic hotel, she feels as if she's been there before. While preparing for a costume party, Phoebe steps into an elevator and arrives in the year 1780. She has no idea why she's there or even how, but there's no doubt she's travelled through time when she comes face to face with the notorious pirate Duncan Rourke. In her heart, it's what she wants a man who will love her like no other ever has and a family she can cherish. But Duncan is a pirate and the British want to hang him. He has enemies everywhere, even in his own house. In a trip through time Phoebe and Duncan discover a love that was meant to last forever. But their future is uncertain and their lives are in danger. To love Duncan would be dangerous, but Phoebe doesn't have a choice. Her destiny is to be with Duncan, no matter what the history books say.
