Thoughtful and gripping historical fantasy. Marie-Josephe is such a sympathetic character, you really feel for her wanting such a different life. Her ability to understand the sea monster was sort of hand-waved away, but that's all right, this story is more about science vs religion, morality vs expediency; can we sacrifice ourselves for the good of others. Very well researched, vivid descriptions of the court. Louis XIV comes across as almost sympathetic despite some of the awful (from our POV) things he does. It's a little slow to start, but picks up about halfway, and by then we start to get a few glimpses of the sea monster's POV.
