I had to stop listening to this book at CD 10 I just couldn't take it anymore. While John Sutter, our main character, seemed okay and actually humorous at times, once he got back together with his x-wife, Susan, the whole story went to hell in a hand-basket. Susan is a spoiled, "beautiful," not too bright, "crazy" (John's words), extremely rich woman who, when they were married the first time, cheated on John with a mafia boss and then killed him. Susan got off scott-free, without serving jail time or probation, because of a deal with the Feds, who had been investigating the mafia boss. John sailed away to "see the world" and get away from Susan after their divorce. He finally settled in London and stayed away for 10 years. The pending death of an old family servant/friend brings him back to Long Island.
John's home for a couple of weeks before he reaches out to Susan and they immediately have sex. Instantly Susan insists they get back together and get married (like, while still lying in bed beside him instantly), to which John agrees (WTF?!). Right away Susan manipulates and criticizes John, going so far as to use their "children" (how she constantly refers to them, as if they have no names of their own) in her manipulation to get him to do what she wants. John doesn't stand up to her, but by that time I've already lost all respect for not only John, but the author, and the book in general.
Whereas there is potential in the story to see where John's new relationship with the deceased mafia boss' son is going/ends up, I am unable to get past the vomit-inducing Susan and their relationship. I stuck with it through half of CD 10, and just couldn't stomach it anymore. This book isn't worth the death of the trees it took to print and there's a few hours of my life that I'll never get back. I've read my last Nelson DeMille book. Such a waste.
