ISBN 0030214416 - Lion is just about the friendliest guy in town - everyone likes him. So when he appears to be sad and doesn't say why, they try to figure it out. He DID mumble something about borrowing... so they ask around - and almost everybody has borrowed something from Lion! They gather it to return to him but he's not home. He's literally down in the dumps, where he's trying to find parts to make two scooters from a pair skates. He figures someone will want to borrow them and if he makes two scooters, he can lend one and still have one for himself. The twist at the end is kind of cute.
I'm not at all sure what the message is here and it's really an average kids' book. The illustrations are okay - but the best illustrations in the book are on the endpages, where all the Sweet Pickles characters are drawn on one and the map of Sweet Pickles is on the other. Young kids aren't too particular about what you read to them, as long as you do, so there's a fair chance they'll enjoy it more than I did.
