Most of the book covers the two from the day they where born, how they grew up, got interested in journalism and China and their experiences there. For the most part, Mel Jacoby spent a long time in various parts of China, whereas Annalee just a few months. The escape from the Philippines was only a small part of the book.

Still, it was an interesting story of how journalism worked back then and how "stringers" hustled to get a steady position and how they dealt with politics, censorship and red tape. If you have an interest in journalism, you'll probably enjoy this book. Mel Jacoby also interacted with some of the more famous names in government, the military and journalism of the time.
