This is the vivid true story of a 9-year-old kid journeying for months without his family from El Salvador to San Rafael, California to reunite with his parents. Various "coyotes" shepherd his little group by bus, boat and walking segment by segment, with lots of danger, boredom and hardship along the way.

While the book is engrossing - especially in the Spanish audiobook version I listened to - the level of detail sometimes became overmuch. In addition, when young Javier repeatedly refers to "La Migra" as "bad people," this reminded me that all of the characters in the book were actually breaking the law, repeatedly and in several countries. This made me uncomfortable.
