Duncan and Melissa. What an unlikely pair! Duncan, a vampire, is currently working as a bouncer, but formerly was an assassin. Melissa, a human, is a young woman rescued by a vampire from an abusive home.

Garreth, Melissa's rescuer, is extremely protctive of her. She hasn't told him of her recent nightmares. Duncan steps in and offers his friendship to Melissa. She doesn't trust anyone but Garreth, so he works hard at winning her trust.

Very sweet story in the beginning. Duncan is one of the most contradictory characters I have known. He is an assassin by trade and considers himself to be a villain. But, time and again, he shows great compassion for Melissa. He woos her in such a way that she begins to blossom. In the end, we do see some of Duncan's "villainous" side emerge.

I loved reading about Duncan and Melissa's journey of self-discovery. They each were wounded, and they each helped the other to come to terms with their pasts. For an erotic novel, there wasn't a lot of actual sex in the story. Lots of foreplay, but it fits for these characters.

Not really what I was expecting - but I did enjoy it!
