While not a major book on World War II, it was certainly an interesting one. Those who read widely about the war will not be surprised at the---what seemed like---total confusion in the last days as Allied forces raced through the dissolving resistance of German forces in Germany and Austria. But they may be surprised to read about Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS soldiers joining forces with American troops to fight other Waffen-SS troops trying to kill off some French VIP political prisoners.

At the end, the author relates the post-war lives of all the major and minor players. While several of the French prisoners continued their political careers, one man later received a Nobel Prize and one woman received several two high awards from the French government. Sadly for one major participant, his post-war life was a downward spiral.
