Time is not doing this author any favors. Yes, this is a classic, but time has made it nearly unreadable. The style of story telling is no longer engaging. The dialog is over sweet and archaic in a way that makes you want to skip whole paragraphs.
As a Southern Californian I really expected to enjoy the history and descriptions of mission life etc.Sadly I was disappointed. There is a smattering of cultural observation and the racial realities exposed are jarring and no doubt historically spot on. Unfortunately the story is like a vintage Gothic romance with political ramblings thrown in. The novel was hard to get through even with the personal perks of name places that are familiar to me. Unless this is a English class required reading, I would suggest finding a classic that is holding up better for a modern reader.
