Shy, mature, intelligent teen Bella Swan moves to Forks with her dad. She doesn't seem to fit in with anyone her own age, and is drawn to mysterious Edward Cullen. Long story short, vampire boy falls in love with human girl. Adding in the "no sex until marriage" message, one would think this is the perfect book for pre-teen girls. One would be horribly wrong.
Among the "sweet" thing Edward Cullen does is sneak into Bella's bedroom at night to watch her sleep and take the engine out of her car so she can't see her friend. I've had people tell me this is the standard for what all relationships should be. This is stalking and borderline emotional abuse, period.
The writing is mediocre and slow-paced. Bella comes off as arrogant. She often mentions how intelligent she is, but beyond quoting "Romeo and Juliet" every chance possible (A story about young lovers who commit suicide to be together- more great role models), she never shows her intelligence.
I love vampire novels. This is not a vampire novel. Please, do not teach your daughter, sister, cousin, or any other young female in your life that this is something to aspire to. Bella tries to kill herself over this boy- this is not a message you want to spread!
