After her divorce, Josie Stovenfield moved back to her hometown and bought a Bed & Breakfast overlooking the coast. The mansion needs a lot of work. Josie has opened only one wing to guests, hoping to eventually raise the money to restore the rest of the rooms. Her business has only been open a few weeks when Josie discovers the body of one of her tenants laying in the area at the base of a broken staircase. The local sheriff is investigating the murder. Josie seems to be his number one suspect. With the help of the resident cats, Amateur Sleuths Nero and Marlowe, Josie decides she needs to find the killer to clear her own name.
I picked up this book because I needed to read a book with a "furry sleuth" for a challenge. This is just not the kind of book I enjoy. Some of the chapters were from Josie's point-of-view. The problem is we knew nothing about her until nearly the second chapter. We didn't even know her name. Then there were the chapters concerning the cat's investigation. They talked among themselves about how they found a clue and had to figure out how to alert the human. These chapters threw me out of the story and any momentum that the mystery had gained.
It took me nearly a week to finish this book. I've been traveling and having a hard time reading, so that probably impacted my enjoyment of the book. I know everytime I started reading, my eyes drifted shut. It seems that other people thoroughly enjoyed this book. My rating: 2.5 Stars.
