Having read just about all of Jodi Thomas's backlist, I settled down to a nice, down-home story about Honey Creek, TX. Piper McKenzie is the town mayor and she has a problem. A man she occasionally saw socially, turns up missing, with his expensive car in the Brazos River. Now she's engaged to him, according to everyone in the know. She turns to one of her brothers, who is a Texas Ranger.

The brother sends Colby, a friend, to silently watch and listen, to find out what is going on and if Piper is in danger. Another stranger happens by; Sam Cassidy is in town to serve as a two-week pastor at All Saints. Sam is just stepping into his minister's shoes after forays into the military and as a firefighter and smoke jumper. And then there's Pecos, an 18-year-old with the world figured out. He has his future planned until one fateful night.

This is the kind of story Jodi Thomas knows well, the small-town story, with the twists and turns that occur in everyday living. This is a great intro to the next two books of this series.
