Kay just gets better and better. This is set in a fantasy world, although I understand it's patterned after Renaissance Italy. There are a couple people who have visions of the future, but otherwise no magic - it's just (just!) an amazingly thoughtful, profound book on the choices we make and those that are made for us, and how the world may or may not be affected by that. Oh and how we remember the events of our past. And the nature of power, and war, and coincidence...well, you have to read it. Lovely storytelling.
