Rowley Knight asks his aunt to recommend a governess for his 16-year-old sister. The aunt brings Emma Lancaster, one of her goddaughters, a young lady who has fallen on hard times. After Emma's mother's death, her father started gambling and lost everything. Although a lady, Emma must earn her keep.

Unbeknownst to Emma, she has met two Knightly men before and worries that they will recognize her. She hopes that wearing mob caps will disguise her enough so she can keep the job. This plotline is a common one, but the author writes well.
