Charlotte has developed a lot since the last book. She is more comfortable with who she is. Her home life is in a bit of disarray because her parents have been fighting. Her mom thinks that there is more then just a reasonable explanation for some of the phenomena that they experience but her dad doesn't want to believe in that nonsense.
Everyone knows about her parents and accept her for who she is. She even goes to her first dance with her crush, Noah. Unfortunately, now he is acting like they are just friends and he isn't interested in her that way. Over Christmas, Charlotte and her family visit a sanitarium and do an investigation with renowned demonologist Leonard Zelden. Zelden supposedly contacts the other side and his assistant Marcus, becomes possessed by The Watcher and gives an ominous warning to Charlotte: "You have pushed back the curtain too far. There is a price to be paid."
After Charlotte attends a party where they performed a ritual called One Hundred Candles, her school starts experiencing some strange happenings. Now Charlotte must debunk what is going. She starts to think part if it might be linked back to the sanitarium.
Once again another page turner from Purnhagen! The ending is incredible and had me scared and flipping the pages hoping everyone is going to be okay!! I also enjoyed that Purnhagen stays true to ages of characters. Charlotte is 17 and experiences what a normal 17 year old experiences (with the added paranormal parts). She isn't caught in a love triangle but does have her first upset in the world of dating...:( Another interesting aspect of this book is that the parents are a vital part of the story. It really is like a breath of fresh air in the young adult genre. I read this book in one sitting right after I finished the first book!
