Mercedes AKA Mercy Thompson is a young woman / automechanic / shape shifter who was raised by a werewolf pack when her bio-mom deserted her. Since her shapeshifting comes of her bio dad's native american heritage, she'n not a werewolf and despite her ability to assume coyote form has never really fitted in.
When a young newly made werewolf stumbles into her life, her life gets complicated fast and soon she's juggling threats from werewolves, witches and vampires alike. Yet Mercy is used to looking out for herself and knows that too much meekness just makes her prey.
This novel is a good introduction to an interesting series and despite the amount of background material that must be explained, the author is adept enough to get the exposition out of the way and keep the reader interest high. The characters are engaging and the dialogue is witty enough to keep up the interest level. While the writing is good throughout, it's seldom great but the storytelling makes up for that and I'm looking forward to the next installment. I enjoyed getting to know these characters and I look forward to spending more time in their world.
I like the way that the gay character is introduced and I look forward to seeing more of him in the rest of the series.
