When Dulcie and her ragged band of survivors, fleeing Civil War-torn Charleston, wash ashore Jermain Island in a stolen boat, they are taken in by the Jermain brothers and their Aunt Bessie. They find the war has also had a terrible toll on the three brothers who are their hosts. Dulcie and Cal, the oldest Jermain, are wary antagonists at first, then succumb to passionate attraction overshadowed by Dulcie's violent pursuers from Charleston. Just about everybody in this book is wounded one way or another.
