This is a powerful contemporary novel with storylines that (unfortunately) appear in daily headlines, including racism, sexual misconduct, and gun violence. The writing is so compelling I could easily visualize the scenes and had a hard time putting the book down when necessary. The author masterfully incorporates social media posts, texts, and emails into the plot as well as Newton's laws of motion and key court decisions regarding school segregation.
The story includes the faith lives of the main characters, in a very natural non-preachy way, so if that's not appealing to you, be aware. While I loved this book, I thought a few too many challenges were placed into the characters' lives. However, the author addressed all of them thoroughly, and most tied into the primary plot.
If you're ready to challenge your understanding of racism in "modern" America, I strongly encourage you to read this important novel.
