I read this because I a Peace Corps wantabe and tentatively assigned to Africa (departing in November--but wait we're talking about a book here). I have read several Peace Corps memoirs and this is the best one of all. Carter tells about many aspects of his experiences, and is honest about his own foibles, which is rare. Meanwhile, he makes it "bigger" than one person's experience by organizing information so that the reader gets a sense of historical change, current politics of South Africa, and the human challenges of being white and being black, being rich and being poor as they're lived every day. This book is unsettling and also very satisfying. Hmm. I suggest you read it.
