I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I feared the author would do the cliched portrayal of the poor, repressed, teased, "sob story" regarding the Wicked Witch of the West. Another surprise is how the book focused on the politics of the Land of Oz, which I admit was something about which I've always wondered. I can't wait to read the rest of Gregory Maguire's books.
