Wow I hated this book. I didn't mind the slow pacing, in the right hands that can be great. However, the only apparent reason for the excruciatingly slow pacing was to spend plenty of time mooning about how Jesuits are smarter, wiser, more noble, better-educated, and more open minded than anyone else ever. Meanwhile, this wise and Godly first contact team had clearly never spent a second glancing at the centuries of thought devoted to how to communicate with aliens, and therefore managed to destroy both themselves and the aliens they were communicating with. I would think this book was a ham-handed satire about the horrors of colonialism and missionary invasion, except the author appears to have been sincere about it.
Also, if you've read literally any history at all, the big reveal will make you roll your eyes so hard you might hurt yourself.
