Another very good entry in the Jane Whitefield series about a Native American guide who helps people obtain new identities and a new life. I recently read the fifth book in the series, Blood Money, which I was a little disappointed in because it seemed to stray from focusing on Jane and was more of a straight crime novel about the doings of mafia thugs. After a several year hiatus, Perry returns to his Whitfield novels and Runner is definitely back in the right direction. In this one, Jane comes out of retirement to help a young 20-year-old pregnant woman named Christine, who is being pursued by the baby's father, Richard Beale, who wants her back because Christine knows too much about his embezzlement of company funds. The company is owned by Beale's parents who turn out to also want the baby so they can raise it to take over the company. Jane is able to guide Christine out of danger, in a fast and furious escape, then teaches her how to stay safe. But Christine makes a big mistake and is recaptured by six professional hit people hired by Beale. When Jane finds out Christine has been taken she goes on a mission to find her and her baby.

I really enjoyed this outing from Perry. It was fast paced and included some unexpected twists along the way. And Jane was portrayed more along the lines of the earlier books in the series, as the savvy Native American woman who uses the skills she learned through her Seneca heritage. I'll be looking forward to reading more in this great series.
