This is a moving story based on good historical research. The second in Jane Kirkpatrick's Kinship and Courage series, it continues a story of how the lives of a small group of surviving women settled in California after a harrowing trip westward. Their lives, woven together through what they have gone through, and through continuing dangers and difficulties, make for a dramatic story of persistence, reaching out for help, personal growth, facing dangers, and making decisions that will set their lives in directions for their futures. Parts of the book kept me "on the edge of my seat," and others brought tears. Finishing this book has me greatly anticipating the 3rd book in the series.
