I liked this book. It's not just for dog lovers although pet owners will get a kick out of how dogs see us. This story is told completely from the perspective of a well-loved older dog. He is nearing the end of his life and his burning desire is to be born a human and he thinks he knows how to make it happen. He understands human speech though he can't talk of course. He's an intelligent dog with a pretty funny sense of humor. He's also a realist who takes life as it comes.
The sections in the book about car racing really didn't catch my interest for I'm not a NASCAR fan. Thankfully there aren't too many sections about car racing. The main story is the conflict between the dog's owner and his wife's rich parents. That tug of war over the granddaughter was heartbreaking and so realistic. I've known grandparents like that. The ending was sweet and a good payoff for all that happened. The ending brought the story full circle. It leaves you with hope.
